World's Best Knife? (Alaskan Ulu)

Did I just find the world’s most versatile knife for hunting, cooking, and sewing? The Alaskan Ulu dates back thousands of years. Let’s talk about some of the history behind this fascinating tool for the kitchen and beyond. I stumbled upon this on a recent trip to Alaska and have been using it ever since. Maybe you will like it too.

They’re great for field dressing animals too. If you hunt.

If you like funky knives you should checkout a yakut knife, i use a ulu and a yakut now for deer season and they are awesome

i have 2 ULU’s, they are a great addition to kitchen tools, very nice for the handicapped. I love the knife. So, all being said… some day I would love Hollywood to put in a film, a ‘ULU knife fight’. thank you.

That intro though! I’m here for it. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

I always enjoyed your videos because of how much history you share about what you are speaking of.

I love giving ulus away as wedding gifts! I think everyone needs one in their kitchen! I was looking for a video so people would know how to use their gift. But when you chop like that, I can’t use your video! That’s going to ruin the blade and that’s not how the ULU is meant to work. It works so easily with the rocking! I’m not sure why you’re chopping with it. ๐Ÿ˜ž

Great knife, not so strong a demo, but a good video until there. Technique here was a little, I think, made up along the way. Call it "bull in ulu shop." But to give the ulu some exposure, points for good intentions.

How is the Bellanca Cruisair? I’d love to see an update on that project!

How about showing us how well it cuts meats? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ Show us how it is used to cut up a whole chicken or prepare a rack of ribs to be cooked. Show us how easy it is to use the blade to make a pork loin into chops. I’m not a professional cook but I was taught by one, my grandmother. How about showing us how it cuts cooked meats as my meals contain more than just vegetables.๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I almost bought one before I was medically retired in 2018 from the transportation industry but couldn’t find much on the proper use of it. If I got one my wife and I probably would argue about who needs to use. One of the best things you can have in the kitchen is a good knife.

Thank you. I found one of these at a thrift store. I liked it, but didn’t know how to use it until I watched this video.

I use it to cut my stake with one hand

  17. @manycoloredshiny on May 29, 2025 at 3:10 pm

It is much easier on hypermobile hands and wrists than a chef or santoku knife.

I have one. Was a gift. Fantastic instrument. Shouldn’t be in my hands lol. First off, that thing was razor sharp. Literally one of the sharpest edged metal blades I’ve ever seen. I used it to cut veggies and some chicken. there was little to no resistance as it went through everything as if it wasn’t there. Used it for cutting everything for a week and it maintained it’s edge pretty well.

Dude, you just as well have purchased an axe, because that is how you are using it. You almost totally missed the whole point of an Ulu knife.
