Unboxing and starting an ADVANCED quilt! | Alaska by Laundry Basket Quilts
Good things take time, right? I think that’s going to be the case with this gorgeous quilt! The unique piecing methods are testing my skills, but I’m up for the challenge. I hope the juice is worth the squeeze!

Beautiful work! I make a lot of Laundry Basket Quilts and they will increase your quilting IQ by 10-fold. Edyta’s videos during the pandemic literally taught me how to quilt. I finished "Tahoe" last year and it really tested me. I recommend starching as much as you possibly can (without losing yardage) and pressing the seams of your blocks open – use a smaller stitch length if you need to. Then try Kimberly Jolly’s "poke a pin" method to match up your points within the blocks. Once the rows are done, then I might nest or press open. Depends on the pattern. AND, my third Oliso died. Got a Laurastar but not sure I like it that much – still testing out. Ironically, the little tiny "Tula Pink" Oliso iron has been doing a great job. Anyway, a long post – looking forward to seeing your final product!
I made the Alaska Rainbow. I was a little disappointed with the muted colors.
Like your video. Learn how to kit the pattern yourself and you’ll save more than half the cost of the kit from LBQ.😉
Thank you for posting! I hope you post the process of each block in this quilt and tell us your thoughts… I’ve been looking at this one for a LONG time – scared of the difficulty level! Editita’s patterns can be complex! Also- I love your view! My quilting space is in the basement
Absolutely gorgeous!!!!
I’ve made an Alaska. It’s a beautiful quilt. I bought the 12 inch block die from A1 quilting/ blue wren dies, which helped because perfectly cut pieces upfront set you up for success! Mine is yellows, greens, and creams.
I have that iron. It still heats up after 2-3 years. But the body just started leaking water… so i will be dry ironing/using a spray bottle!
Hope you like yours! It gets the job done 😊
I bought this pattern and templates back in January because I was bored and wanted a challenge. I think I have most of my fabric but I have not had a chance to even start it. I am glad you are sharing this with us so I can see if I am going to start it soon or procrastinate even more 🤣
Good job on the block! I bought a mini Oliso on a whim(it was a floor model and on clearance). I hate it! It gets so hot you can hardly touch it. Guess that is why they were getting rid of it. Anyway, back to my old cordless Panasonic, which I love!
I have that exact same Black and Decker Iron. It’s amazing!
Looks great!! Keep going!!
I like my cheaper irons best. I have heard too many stories of the Oliso irons not lasting. You can get the iron plus a lot of fabric for what the Oliso’s cost.
Love, love, love your honesty and applaud you for the beautiful blocks you created despite the challenges!
I love LBQ fabrics and patterns. My last order included the little card about the cruise. I called the girl but she never emailed me any info even though I gave her my email. But cruises are fun!
So nice to see your first blocks and you did great! I have the Alaska pattern. I haven’t picked my fabrics yet and didn’t get the templates. I have the Alaska ruler but placing it on the template sheet, it didn’t look like it matched the lines of the ruler perfectly. I will reach out to Laundry Basket customer service about that. Will you have videos for the other blocks as well?
Your blocks look great! It will be a family heirloom!
I love the Beach House line! I have a quilt kitted up using this line (not the Alaska quilt). I applaud you for braving such an advanced pattern!
What a pretty quilt that’s going to be. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I had second hand anxiety for you, but you did it in spades–great job!
I’m thinking I must be a blue girl. I’m always drawn to those shades of blue combined. The colors are nautical and it has a mariners compass vibe, but some of the fabrics patterns are almost colonial. Or am I missing the mark?
Say hi to Gumbo😻
Beautiful! 🩵 I was working on a harder quilt ( Pineapple Farm by Elizabeth Hartman) while you kept me company and I felt encouraged to press on! 😊
I’m so for this video I bought the pattern and have been on laundry basket beige , I’m working on sweet pea but using kaffe and tula on it and it’s really pretty !!! Excited for you it’s not has hard as you think I wanna see you do the common bride pattern that one is my favorite
Starch or best press will be your friend with these littel bias pieces
Edyta has YouTube videos to help you with making this 😀
Oh wow, that is going to be a beautiful quilt. I love the colours. Top job on the blocks. How are you finding your new machine?
Can’t stand this voice. Make up your mind – do you want to talk or do you want to laugh – especially when nothing is even remotely amusing. And what makes you so silly? Ridiculous video.
Your blocks look lovely! I’ve bought myself a pre-cut kit and am a little nervous to start. Thank you for sharing.
Has anyone else tried paper piecing these blocks? My practice piece (cutting the pieces with the templates) has come out very slightly too big so I will lose the points when the blocks are sewn together. I wondered if paper piecing would be more accurate?
Her patterns are always gorgeous! Cant wait to see your continued progress! I just started her Valley Ranch quilt and it’s quite intricate. I think that’s why I love them such though!
I would do this quilt paper pieces.
Thank you so much for doing such an honest honest review because I love her quilts and her fabric but as a newer quilter, who’s only been doing this for about nine months I have been very hesitant to tackle something like this because I just feel like I’ll be incredibly frustrated and I don’t know if I would finish if I felt like a complete failure every single step I would say I think I would start with the pre-cut kitsbecause that would take out one of the major steps, but I definitely think I need some more time under my belt first. But this kind of review is what I search for.
I am making this quilt too. I watch her videos and make the blocks in the order she suggests so you build skills as you go. I also bought the wood pressing tool she uses and it’s a game changer. Can’t wait to see your finished quilt
Way to go with your first blocks! This is going to be a beauty! 💙 I bought Edyta’s book, A Season in Blue, a few years ago and it has the Alaska pattern (although, I think it’s a smaller version). I bought the templates too, but have yet to start it. I look forward to watching your progress on this one (well, all your quilts 🙂) and learning from your experiences with it. As always, thanks for the inspiration to keep pushing our skills!
I’m making this quilt in their precut BOM… I’m nervous and haven’t started it yet. We are in month 2 as of March. You’re a brave girl, but you got this!! ❤ Beach house fabrics, your backing is gorgeous!!
I think you have done so well with both your cutting and piecing so far! It looks a very intricate pattern. The fabric is so stunning isn’t it? I believe Edyta has done some videos on making this quilt, and if so I hope they help you. I look forward to seeing your progress. Good luck
So beautiful!! Do you have any advice on how to match up the points/corners when joining pieces?
I’m working on the regular sized quilt of this pattern. Your blocks look great! Your points look nice and crisp. Great job!
Beautiful fabric! How exciting!
I think you are doing a fabulous job on your Alaska quilt. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
There are holes in the templates that you mark when you cut and then line up with the opposite piece of fabric when you go to sew a seam to make sure it lines up correctly. If you go to her YT page and search Alaska she shows it in one of the first videos of the block assembly.
