Sharon Napanangka Butcher is a talented Aboriginal artist born in Papunya in 1968, a place renowned as the birthplace of the Western Desert dot-painting movement.
Her artwork often reflects the natural beauty and cultural significance of her surroundings, depicting waterholes, creeks, and sand hills around Papunya. Sharon is celebrated for her “Kapi Tjukurrpa” (Water Dreaming) works, which vividly represent elements of storms-wind, rain, thunderclouds, and lightning.
In addition to her artistic achievements, Sharon has played a significant role in the Papunya Tjupi Arts Centre, a 100% Aboriginal-owned community arts organization. She joined the center as an artist in 2010 and was elected as a Director in 2017 1 2. Her dedication extends beyond creating art; she has contributed to curatorial practices and administrative work, earning recognition as a Senior Arts Worker.
Sharon’s works have been showcased in galleries across Australia and internationally, making her an emerging artist to watch.
