Neva Mathias (Cup'ik) Artist Talk, Basket Weaving in Chevak, Alaska

August 7, 2021. Sheldon Jackson Museum artist-in-residence Neva Mathias (Cup’ik) gives an informal Artist Residency Recap Talk where shares what it’s like to live in Chevak, Alaska, a small Cup’ik village located slightly inland from the Bering Sea. Through her narrative, she takes us to collect grasses with other women along the shores of Hooper Bay, shares how she processes the harvested grass and shows samples of her work.

The 2021 Alaska Native Artist Residency Program is underwritten by the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum with a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and support from Alaska Airlines, Eagle Bay Inn, Westmark Hotel (Sitka), and private donors.
