Local Inspiration: Alaska Native Artists Study the Collections

Local Inspiration is a program that connects emerging Alaska Native artists to Smithsonian collections at the Living Our Cultures exhibit and at the Anchorage Museum as a resource for research and study to advance their development as an artist, and to strengthen the relationship between Alaska Native artists and the museums. The first “pilot” artist (July 9-10, 2014) was Allison Warden, an Iñupiaq inter-disciplinary artist whose work you can learn about at http://www.aku-matu.com.

There is a beautiful and informative book on native American glass artists titled "Fusing Traditions – Transformations in Glass by Native American Artists." In recent years, a group of talented native American artists have selected glass as a medium for their creative expression. This handsome publication is Illustrated with beautiful, full page color plates and informative essays. Native American artists have turned inward, using the studio art methods initially implemented by the American Studio Glass Movement to create works of art inspired by objects of use and ritual to Native Americans. The book is available at: http://www.fineartspress.com
