Chilkat Protector, a Handwoven Historical Document from the Northwest Coast of Alaska
By Lily Hope
2020

For hundreds of years Chilkat Blankets have documented history, clan migration, and stories for the Indigenous peoples of the Northwest Coast of America & Canada. “Chilkat Protector” will serve as a record of this time.

In the future people will know we were here, we took care of each other and we survived. We are still weaving.

Materials: Chilkat Weaving using thigh-spun warp of merino wool and cedar bark. Merino weft yarns. Ermine tails. Tin cones.

Dimensions: 8 X 4.5 inches woven
Plus 3.5 inches fringe.

… I feel very, very silly for initially wondering if I could buy one of these.
